Configure NetBIOS NT WKSTN 40 for Maximum Security

In Windows NT, the WINS client (TCP/IP) transport is normally bound to the LAN adapter, which exposes your computer's data to the Internet. To secure networking, the MS Loopback Adapter may be installed. NetBEUI will be installed and configured to enable safe LAN networking.

Install MS Loopback Adapter

In your Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel

Double click on the Network icon

Select Adapters tab, then click the Add... button

In the Select Network Adapter dialog box, choose MS Loopback Adapter

Click OK

In the MS Loopback Adapter Card Setup dialog box, click OK

At the prompt, insert the original Windows NT CD-ROM, click Continue

In the Network dialog box, click Close

The TCP/IP Properties dialog box will appear

Underneath Adapter, use the drop down menu to find and select MS Loopback Adapter

In the IP Address Box, enter 10.0.0.1

In the Subnet Mask, enter 255.0.0.0

Click OK

Reboot your computer

Install NetBEUI Transport

In your Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel

Double click on the Network icon

Select Protocols tab, then click the Add... button

In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, select NetBEUI Protocol

Click OK

At the prompt, insert the Windows NT CD-ROM, click Continue

After the NetBEUI Protocol has been installed, click OK

Reboot your computer

Configure Adapter-to-Protocol Bindings

In your Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel

Double click on the Network icon

Select Bindings tab

Next to Show Bindings for: select all protocols from the drop-down menu

Click on + sign next to WINS Client (TCP/IP) to display all adapters

For each Adapter EXCEPT for MS Loopback Adapter: Select an adapter by clicking on it, then click the Disable button at the bottom of the dialog box

Select MS Loopback Adapter, then click the Enable button at the bottom of the dialog box

For any Protocol (e.g. TCP/IP Protocol or NetBEUI Protocol) EXCEPT WINS Client (TCP/IP): Click on + sign next to the Protocol name to display all adapters

Select MS Loopback Adapter, then click the Disable button at the bottom of the dialog box

Click OK

Reboot your computer
