 Windows Me.

Windows Millennium

Windows Me is a Microsoft operating system designed specifically for the home computer user. It is the most significant upgrade to date for the Windows 9x product family. It incorporates several major enhancements over Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) by delivering enhancements in the areas of PC start-up and diagnostics, multimedia, home networking, and Internet connectivity.   Other useful links:

Improved Start-up and PC diagnostics

Microsoft has added new features that make Windows Me start-up much quicker that previous versions of Windows 9x. System restore enables users to roll back the PC software configuration to a date or time when it was working properly in the event of a malfunction. System File Protection enhancements prevent accidental or unauthorized overwriting of critical system files. Windows Me is based on DOS like older Windows 9x, but it no longer includes the real-mode DOS that lets Windows 9x restart in MS-DOS mode or use a floppy to boot to a DOS prompt. Users can still open a DOS window from within Windows Me.

Enhanced home networking

Windows Me greatly simplifies home networking through the Home Networking Wizard. With the Wizard, users can quickly and easily install network components, find shared resources and connect to them. Windows Me also provides improved Internet Connection Sharing technology; simplified USB networking; and the first implementation of Universal Plug and Play technology in a Microsoft product. Universal Plug and Play is an emerging standard with which devices within a home or office can communicate with each other automatically.

The best in digital media

Windows Me provides advancements in Windows Image Acquisition, which help users transfer digital images from digital cameras, scanners, and other WIA-compliant devices. Windows Movie Maker provides users with the tools to digitally edit, save, and share home videos. Windows Media Player 7 is a tool where users can find, organize, and play digital media.

Improved Internet experience

Windows Me incorporates Internet Explorer 5.5, the latest version of Microsoft's popular Web browser software that features faster overall performance and improved printing capabilities. It has built-in support for new broadband Internet technology such as cable modems and digital subscriber lines (DSL) that can greatly increase your Internet connection speeds. Windows Me also provides communication tools for everything from e-mail to instant messaging to video conferencing.

What impact will Windows Me have on computer-based measurement and automation?

It is important to note that Windows Millennium Edition is the last major upgrade planned for the Windows 9x architecture. Microsoft is currently working on Whistler, their next generation desktop operating system developed around the Windows 2000 architecture. We expect to see some customer migration to Windows Me, but in the near term we expect Windows 2000 Professional to become the preferred operating system of choice for distributed measurement and automation systems. Windows 2000 Professional is Microsoft's operating system designed for technical, engineering and business computing. Windows 2000 Professional combines the best features of Windows 98, including plug and play support for a wide variety of hardware peripherals and power management, while significantly extending the manageability, reliability, security, and performance of Windows NT Workstation 4.0 providing an ideal platform for distributed measurement and automation applications.
