 Win98 Protection Error

Windows 98 Protection Error

This error is a result of an essential device driver not loading properly when windows boots up. These errors occur frequently after some component or driver is added, upgraded, or changed in some way.

Resolution

1. Uninstall - go into safe mode and remove or uninstall the new driver or component. You may have to open the computer up and remove the add-on card that has been added recently. Try and think what may have been added or changed since windows was working fine and restore it to that state.

2. Virus - a virus can sometime cause these errors, especially if the windows system files are infected. Reset the computer and insert a bootable anti-virus disk and check for viruses.

3. I/O Conflict - there may be two or more devices competing for the same resources. Check the settings in the CMOS for potential conflicts and if needed boot into safe mode and manually set the resources on the add-on cards. You can also try and remove the add-on devices and let windows redetect them. There are some instances where windows or the PNP motherboard just cannot setup a device properly and it may need to be manually set.

4. Registry - a corrupted registry can also cause a Windows Protection Error. Try the following:

1. Boot to a Dos Prompt (Hit F8 on bootup and goto command prompt only)
2. attrib system.1st -s -h -r
3. cd windows
4. attrib system.dat -s -h -r
5. copy c:\system.1st system.dat
6. attrib system.dat +s +h +r
7. cd \
8. attrib system.1st +s +h +r
9. reboot

Windows will then redetect the hardware in the computer. WARNING: By doing this you will also have to reinstall any windows application software and settings.

5. Memory - the memory on the motherboard has failed and will not allow the device drivers to load properly. Replace if needed.

6. Motherboard - the motherboard has a serious flaw which will not allow it to go into windows. Try stripping the system down to nothing more than a video card, hard drive, floppy, and power supply. Then install a clean copy of windows. This will help to isolate whether the problem is a hardware device such as the memory, motherboard, video, or power supply or whether the problem is software related. If the system boots up fine after doing this, then try and add one add-on card at a time and reboot. Replace the motherboard if needed.

6. Invalid VxD Dynamic Link Call

These errors are usually generated by wayward, corrupt, or missing device drivers.

Resolution

1. Upgrade or Replace - upgrade or replace the driver with the latest version. This will involve downloading the latest driver off the internet and installing it.

2. Uninstall - remove and reinstall any device driver or program that has been added recently to the computer. Make sure you are using the latest version available. If there is a Microsoft Certified driver available use it.
