VFAT Errors on 98

VFAT errors are generated when windows has difficulty accessing or reading the File Allocation Table. These errors happen most frequently when a computer is upgraded in some way or the hard disk configuration is changed in some way.

Resolution

1. CMOS - check the cmos settings for the hard drive/drives. VFAT errors occur frequently when a hard drive was fdisked and formatted with the LBA mode enabled in the cmos and it was changed somehow to Normal mode. The reverse also applies.

2. Third Party Software - make sure there are no real-mode drivers for the hard drive controllers in the config.sys file. You may even want to try renaming the config.sys file and then deleting it. Reboot and see if this helps. Also check the 386Enh section of the system.ini file in the windows directory for anything suspecious. Backup the system.ini file and then edit it and comment out any line in the 386Enh section that doesn't have a * in front of the driver. Example:

ebios=*ebios OK
device=*vcd OK
device=*int13 OK
device=c:\windows\mh32bit.exe NOT OK

comment it out:

;device=c:\windows\mh32bit.exe

NOTE: Microsoft doesn't support or guarantee the use of EZ-Drive, Disk Manager, MaxBlast, or similiar software used to allow non-LBA motherboards to access Enhanced IDE drives.

3. Real-Mode Drivers - try renaming the config.sys file and then delete it.

4. ifshlp.sys - make sure this file exists in the windows directory. If it doesn't try copying it from another computer with the same windows version.

5. Fdisk - if the above suggestions don't help, you may need to fdisk and reformat the hard drive.
